As with any other technology, ozone provides excellent results when it is used
correctly. Main reasons behind failed trials or applications are:
- Most users cannot quantify ozone output from the ozone generator (Ozone
analyzers are very expensive) and rely on manufacturers claim. Most ozone
generators are over-sold & produce much less ozone than rated output. Good news
is that there are some manufacturers in the market who provide genuine products.
- Most users don’t fully understand that solubility of ozone in water is quite low
especially when the temperature of water is high. Using a diffuser or venturi to
mix ozone in water is very inefficient. Most of ozone is wasted as off-gas and
desired results are not achieved.
- Ozone systems are plagued with leakage problems due to the aggressive nature of
ozone gas. Most systems start leaking after few months of operation & then it is
a constant battle. Good news is that some manufacturers have solved this
problem.
- Ozone systems use high voltage (~15 KV) to produce ozone. These systems are
extremely sensitive to feed gas humidity and can fail within hours due to
short-circuiting. Most manufacturers understate the importance of feed gas
quality control.
Ozone provides excellent results in cooling water treatment as biocide &
corrosion inhibitor, wastewater treatment as coagulant aid and odor control
applications.
