To maintain clean heat transfer surfaces, it's best to eliminate creation of suspended solids rather than rely on deposit control chemicals. Truth is some of the suspended solids will deposit on heat transfer surfaces, no matter what. Source of suspended solids could be makeup water, corrosion in steam system or contamination of steam system.
Hardness leakage
Hardness leakage from softeners is mainly responsible for scale buildup. Most critical applications have online hardness analyzers that generate an alarm when hardness leakage is detected. But it's too late because hard water has already contaminated boiler feedwater. These alarms do help in minimizing hardness leakage but do not eliminate it.
